Welcome address to the participants
Every six years on average, the Wetlands International and IUCN SSC Woodcock and Snipe Specialist Group (WSSG) organise a Workshop to provide information on Woodcock and Snipe research.
For the first time the WSSG Workshop will be held in Russia.
This large country is the main breeding area for many migratory species that migrate and winter in the Southern part of Europe. The relations between the WSSG and Russia are very strong. Since the last 15 years, several research agreements have been signed by Group members with the University of Saint Petersburg, the State Informational-Analytical Center of Game Animals and Environment in Moscow and now the Russian Society for Conservation and Studies of Birds . Due to this very long cooperation, the choice of Russia to hold the 7th Woodcock and Snipe Workshop appeared obvious.
Every year, the WSSG publishes a Newsletter in which research in progress and general information are presented. This is the main link between all WSSG members.
But WSSG Workshops are major events for everyone interested in these species. Open to researchers, ornithologists, hunters, students, stakeholders, they are a great opportunity for the WSSG members to present their works and to discuss with different partners.
The French Hunting and wildlife Agency, Wetlands International and UICN with the help of the Embassy of France in Russia, the Russian Association of Hunters and Fishermen and the Russian CIC Delegation are pleased to invite you to attend the Seventh Woodcock and Snipe Workshop in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from 16th to 18th of May, 2011.
